Early Career

Born on September 1, 1972, in Greenville, Texas, Buzz Williams grew up playing basketball and eventually went on to play at Navarro College in Corsicana, Texas. After his playing career ended, Williams began coaching at the high school level before eventually moving on to the college ranks.

Early College Coaching Career

Williams’ first college coaching job was as an assistant at Texas A&M-Commerce in 1994. He then went on to serve as an assistant coach at Northwestern State, Colorado State, and Texas A&M before landing his first head coaching job at the University of New Orleans in 2006.

University of New Orleans

Williams’ tenure at the University of New Orleans was short-lived, as he coached the team for just one season before leaving to take the head coaching job at Marquette University.

Marquette University

Williams coached at Marquette from 2008 to 2014, leading the team to five NCAA tournament appearances and one Sweet 16 appearance. During his time at Marquette, Williams was named Big East Coach of the Year twice.

Virginia Tech

In 2014, Williams left Marquette to take the head coaching job at Virginia Tech. In his first season at Virginia Tech, Williams led the team to a 20-15 record and a trip to the NIT tournament. In 2019, he led the team to its first NCAA tournament appearance since 2007.

Texas A&M

After five seasons at Virginia Tech, Williams left to take the head coaching job at Texas A&M in 2019. In his first season at Texas A&M, Williams led the team to a 16-14 record before the season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
